The Contractor began excavation for the Sweetwater Connector Tunnel the afternoon of 01-28-10. This tunnel connects the Sweetwater construction shaft with the Sweetwater Intake structure. The intake structure is currently under construction and is located behind the old BP station on the corner of Maxham and Old Alabama. Blasting of this tunnel, which is approximately 9' x 12' by 1400 feet long, and was completed August 23, 2010.

The Contractor begin excavation for the I-20 Connector Tunnel May 21th, 2010. The I-20 connector tunnel blasting was comleted December in 2010. This tunnel, which connects the I-20 Intake Structure with the TBM tunnel was driven about 300 feet below the I-20 roadway and connects with a surface structure east of the Walmart at Thornton Road. This tunnel is approximately 10' x 10' and 500 feet long. The tunnel lining is complete, and consists of Hobas pipe and cement grout. These existing surface flows will be taken down to the tunnel level in a shaft lined with ductile iron pipe.

The Contractor begin excavation for the Silver Creek connector tunnel June 9th, 2010. This tunnel was driven about 230 feet below Silver Creek and connects with a surface structure east of Pritchett Industrial Blvd. This tunnel is approximately 12 feet wide, and about 12 feet tall, and about 100 feet long. The tunnel lining, consisting of Hobas pipe and cement grout, is complete. These existing surface flows will be taken down to the tunnel level in a shaft lined with ductile iron pipe. The main blasting work at Silver Creek was complete August 3, 2010. Main TBM tunnel concrete lining is in place past this connection.

The Contractor began blasting for the Carroll Creek connector tunnel August 2, 2010. This tunnel was driven about 220 feet below Carroll Creek and connected with a surface structure east of the Car Max on Thornton Road. This tunnel is approximately 13 feet wide, and about 14 feet tall, and about 70 feet long. These existing surface flows will be taken down to the tunnel level in a shaft lined with ductile iron pipe. The tunnel was lined with concrete due to it's short length. The main blasting work at Carroll Creek was completed August 25, 2010. The TBM tunnel's concrete lining has been completed past this junction.

Blasting of the Nickajack Chamber at the end of the 3300 foot long Nickajack TBM tunnel was completed September 24, 2010. This small TBM tunnel was 8.5 feet in diameter. Final lining is in place, consisting of Hobas pipe and cement grout.

The Six Flags Adit (a short piece of tunnel) is complete. The TBM tunnel's concrete tunnel lining is approximately 1600 l.f. west of this junction as of January 26, 2012

There are a couple of blasts which will be required to deepen the Sweetwater and South Cobb Construction Shafts before the final concrete lining is placed at the bottom of the shaft. This work is currently scheduled for early summer of 2012.
